I Run into a Darkness is the sixth album past American musician Will Oldham, released on Palace Records on Jan 19, 1999 every bit the commencement album under the proper noun Bonnie "Prince" Billy. The album features appearances from Bob Arellano, Colin Gagon, Paul Oldham, David Pajo, and Peter Townsend.

I See a Darkness received generally positive reviews from music critics. Samir Khan of Pitchfork described the album as Oldham's "consummate offer" and the "type of tape that demands alone reverence".[8] Gregg Rounds of AllMusic wrote that it showcased "a more melodic manner than the veteran Palace listener might be used to", while at the same fourth dimension noting that Oldham "hasn't abased his foundation of mordant lyrics and minimalist arrangements, but he has built a diverseness of different layers that make this album an emotional and pleasurable listening experience".[2] The A.V. Order'southward Stephen Thompson remarked that I Meet a Darkness was the "well-nigh appropriate synthesis yet of Oldham's vocals and bankroll ring".[xi] Simon Williams of NME was more reserved in his praise of the album, advising listeners that "patience is a virtue" while however calling information technology a "delicate, intelligent tape".[7]

Legacy [edit]

I See a Darkness has been ranked in several publications' lists of best albums.[12] Pitchfork ranked it the 9th best album of the 1990s.[13] In 2004, Stylus Magazine placed I Run across a Darkness at number 171 on its list of the 200 best albums of all time,[fourteen] while in 2006, Mojo deemed information technology a "modern classic" and the twentieth best album released during the magazine'southward lifetime.[fifteen] The anthology was too included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before Y'all Die.[16]

In 2002, Matt LeMay of Stylus Magazine wrote that "past addressing concepts so thou with such sincerity and skill, the album is incredibly powerful under even the most mundane of circumstances".[17] Reviewing its 2012 reissue, Aaron Lavery of Drowned in Sound called I See a Darkness Oldham's "finest accomplishment thus far" and the "essential release" in his discography.[4] Q cited the album as "his masterpiece, ushering in a direct and less mythic mode of songwriting".[ix]

Johnny Greenbacks recorded the titular track on his 2000 anthology American 3: Solitary Human, with Oldham providing background vocals.[xviii] Steve Adey likewise covered the title track on his 2006 album All Things Real.[xix] Rosalía covered the song on her first album Los Ángeles in 2017.
